ID: README Wed Apr 10 00:42:25 EST 2002 ground/X Welcome to the gcc.irc ircII script. This README file covers basic installation of the script as well as where to obtain new versions ect. System Requirements: GCC requires a current version of ircII to function correctly. You can check which version of ircII you are running by issuing the command: irc -v from your shell prompt. If your version of ircII was not released in 2001 or later not only will it not work with this script, it contains exploits that will allow a remote IRC user access to your shell. If you need to upgrade your version of ircII you can find the homepage at: http://www.eterna.com.au/ircii/news.html I. Installation It is assumed that you successfully unpacked the gcc tar archive or you wouldn't be reading this. Installation is pretty straight forward, there are two primary ways to use this script 1. Simply load it from inside the IRC client. After you have connected to your IRC server issue the command: /load /path/to/the/script/gcc.irc For example if you unpacked the gcc script in to the directory /home/ground you would type: /load /home/ground/gcc/gcc.irc You should see the normal gcc startup message. Enjoy the script. This approach will not load the script every time your IRC client is started. If you want to do that, see the next section. 2. Add the gcc script to your .ircrc file to be loaded on startup. Edit the .ircrc file in your home directory with your favorite text editor and add the following line: load /path/to/the/script/gcc.irc For example if you unpacked the gcc script in to the directory /home/ground you would add the line: load /home/ground/gcc/gcc.irc You can also use the included 'gccinstall' shell script that came with this package to add the line to load gcc to your .ircrc. You should see the normal gcc startup message every time you start your IRC client. Enjoy the script. II. Getting new versions For the latest version of gcc you can visit the script's web site at: http://gccirc.sourceforge.net There is also a mirror site which can be accessed at: http://laf.cioe.com/~ground/gcc You can always get the latest beta version (in development) at the main site, the mirror only has the current stable version. If you have some extra time to test my beta code I would appreciate your comments. It's always best to catch bugs before a release. III. Project mailing lists If you would like to keep up on script developments or be notified when new versions are released there are two mailing lists you can join. The gccirc-announce mailing list is a low traffic list which contains only information about new stable releases of gcc. If you would like to be notified every time a new stable version of GCC is released this is the list for you. The gccirc-discuss mailing list is for the general discussion of the script. It is an anything goes list, feel free to post comments/suggestions/bug reports/feature requests or anything else of interest to users of the script. Announcements of new beta versions will also be announced to this list. To subscribe to any of these lists or read the archive content on the web visit: http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=2349 IV. Contact info and reporting bugs If you have a comment or suggestion to pass along or have found a bug in the script please feel free to email me at ground@laf.cioe.com. Feature requests will be added to my 'ideas' list and bug reports will have top priority in the next release. If you think you have found a bug please use the included 'debug.irc' script to generate a debug log. If you email the log to me with your problem report I will have a much better chance of finding the problem. You should also be able to catch me on EfNet as 'ground' unless the ever present nick thieves are at work.
